The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and SCRI joined forces on 1 April 2011 to create The James Hutton Institute. It is the first Institute of its type in Europe and will make major, new contributions to the understanding of key global issues such as food, energy and environmental security.

Rural development expert, Professor Mark Shucksmith will be appearing at the Macaulay Institute in Aberdeen to deliver a lecture on “Does the idea of Integrated Rural Development still have any place in Scotland? ” on Friday 6 June. Knowing that soils are a potential climate change time-bomb is nothing new – But now, for the first time, a group of international scientists have found a way to distinguish just how much of these ancient carbon stores are being lost to the atmosphere as CO2.
