The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and SCRI joined forces on 1 April 2011 to create The James Hutton Institute. It is the first Institute of its type in Europe and will make major, new contributions to the understanding of key global issues such as food, energy and environmental security.

If the UK is to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2050, as set out in the Government White Paper ‘Our Energy Future’, and the energy demands of the aviation industry continue to grow at current rates, then all other sectors – industry and commerce, land transport and domestic – will have to use completely carbon-free energy sources by that time. The Macaulay Institute announces with great sadness the death of the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute – Andrew Raven. Mr Raven, who had been on the Board of Governors since 1997, died on Sunday, 2 October 2005 following a brave seven year battle with cancer. [continue reading ... ]
